Top Dog Names of 2016

Guest Author: Jessi Klein

This has been a year of crazy surprises, and that extends to the top dog names of 2016.

As 2016 comes to a close, My Dog’s Name, an interactive site to find the right dog name for you, put together a list of their dog top names this year in a fun infographic.

The results are based on the selections of the 3.2 million people who used the site so far this year.

And what did they find?

The results were a mix of tried-and-true favorites and some flat-out surprises.

Top 10 Female Dog Names

Another year and the name Bella is still on top. In fact, it’s been in the number one spot since the site launched in 2013. Other modern classics like Daisy, Bailey, Zoey, Abby/Abigail and Luna also continue to hold strong.

A big surprise, however, is the lasting popularity of Disney character names. It’s been 20 years since the Lion King launched and Nala is still a very popular pet name. Other Disney names like Elsa, Belle, Ariel, Alice and Minnie have been in the top 50 for years.

  1. Bella
  2. Daisy
  3. Abby
  4. Luna
  5. A.J.
  6. Hazel
  7. Bailey
  8. Nala
  9. Addie
  10. Zoey

Top 10 Male Dog Names
Strong and brawny names like Axel, Diesel and Jax were high on the list, which makes more sense when you take into account the fact that My Dog’s Name ranks high for tough dog names.

Even so, universally loved names like Bear, Duke, Max and Buddy placed high on the report.

  1. Bear
  2. Axel
  3. Diesel
  4. Jax
  5. Duke
  6. Biscuit
  7. Bandit
  8. Tiger
  9. Buddy
  10. Max

Other Interesting Trends

Today more than ever, pet owners consider their dog to be part of the family, and this shows in the choice of dog names. Old-school names like Fido, Rover and Spot are out. Instead, dog names are starting to reflect trends in baby names more than ever.

Take for example the list of the top cute dog names – which is a top category selected on My Dog’s Name.

Both the main top 10 lists and the most popular cute dog names include some of the top names new parents are using for their kids.
